Who do you work with?:
Porto G is an outreach project designed to support female, male and transgender sex workers who work in indoor settings. Clients and managers are also included in our target population as they are central figures and key influences in the sex industry however they have been consistently left apart from investigation and intervention.
How are sex workers involved in your organisation?:
Our team also integrates peers that, as members of the sex work community, have a better knowledge and proximity with the target population. They are involved in needs assessment, the conception and review of information leaflets, the evaluation of the project activities and in publicising the project and introducing the outreach teams to unknown sex venues.
Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?:
Oppose the criminalisation and other legal oppression of sex work and support its recognition as work
Critique the trafficking paradigm that conflates representations of sex work, migration, and mobility
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Oppose human rights abuses, including coercive programming, mandatory testing, raids and forced rehabilitation
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
Advocate for the economic empowerment and social inclusion of sex workers as sex workers
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face:
The legal framework of sex work in Portugal doesn't recognise sex work as work which brings numerous difficulties in sex workers daily lives and fosters discrimination against them, particularly if we consider that most of our target population is migrant and lives in Portugal with no residence permit. The situation pushes sex workers to a greater vulnerability with concerns over health and human rights violations.
Describe other areas of your work:
Outreach work - provision of harm reduction and other supplies and develop health promotion. Provides support services and refer service users to the local community network. Implement empowerment actions increasing the capacity of sex workers to have more control over their lives. Implement advocacy actions to promote service users rights and the outreach harm reduction practices.
