How are sex workers involved in your organisation?:
Sex workers are involved in decision making. They manage and participate in organisational activities. They are empowered through organisational training and meetings. We work as a team and support each other in all situations and conditions.
Which of NSWP priority areas does your organisation work on?:
Advocate for universal access to health services, including primary health care, HIV and sexual and reproductive health services
Speak out about violence against sex workers, including violence from police, institutions, clients, and intimate partners, while challenging the myth that sex work is inherently gender-based violence
Oppose human rights abuses, including coercive programming, mandatory testing, raids and forced rehabilitation
Challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers, their families and partners, and others involved in sex work
Advocate for the economic empowerment and social inclusion of sex workers as sex workers
What are the two main challenges that the sex workers you work with face:
Sex workers face stigma and discrimination by health service providers which hinders access to proper health care and support. Sex workers lack information, education and communication and this leads to self denial of sex workers and increase of HIV infections among others. Police arrests and violations leads to poor treatment of HIV sex workers because they skip their medication and sex workers are arrested without trial which violates their rights.
Describe other areas of your work:
We do community outreaches and identify sex workers needs and build relationships with sex worker communities, partners and allies. We distribute condoms and lubricants, represent our members in national and international forums. We have sex workers' peers educators and a trained paralegal who give legal assistance and follow up if our members are arrested.
